Elevated Work Platform

What is an EWP?

Elevating work platform is the term used to describe all configurations of EWPs being self-propelled, trailer mounted (towable) or truck mounted. This term is not used when the work platform is an attachment such as a “personnel basket” or “cage” fitted to plant such as a forklift. Below are pictures of the most commonly found EWPs.

Elevating Work Platform – AS2550.10; 1.3.7

A mobile machine (device) that is intended to move persons, tools and material to working positions and consists of at least a work platform with controls, an extending structure and a chassis. There are many variations of EWP but they can be placed in one of two categories: Boom type or Scissor type.

There needs to be some form of proof that the operator has been trained in the safe use of an elevating work platform (EWP). Verbal instruction is not an effective method of training as it lacks written proof of training evidence. The EWP Operator Training Program or ‘Yellow Card’ is the result of the EWPA helping the industry to comply with the Acts.

The EWP Operator Licence is proof of completion in one or more modules in various types of EWPs. There are five different EWP training modules plus a transport module.

The modules include:
  • * VL – Vertical Lift
  • * SL – Scissor Lift
  • * BL – Self Propelled Boom lift
  • * TL – Trailer lift
  • * TM – Truck Mounted Lift

Whilst these are all classed as EWPs, each one is very different in use and safe operation.

  • The ‘Yellow Card’ provides evidence that the operators of specific types of EWPs have been trained in the safe use of that type of work platform.
  • The supplier, employer and user all have documentary evidence of the training received. This can be verified on the EWPA website.

This licence covers boom type EWPs 11 metres and over (eg truck mount, trailer mount and self-propelled). It is recommended that you contact your State or Territory Regulatory Authority as licensing procedures may differ slightly in each State or Territory.

WHAT IF I DO NOTHING? The ‘do nothing’ approach is a time bomb. A blatant disregard of the law (the Act is law) will result in hefty fines and or jail. We all have a responsibility for workplace health and safety.
